1.      Please introduce yourself (background, interests, your MBTI, and so on)

Hello, my name is Souad, and I am from Morocco. I previously majored in international trade back home. Now, I'm onto my second master's degree, this time in international relations at Sogang GSIS. Apart from academics, I love drawing and painting; it's how I express myself best. However, I also enjoy watching football, and my favorite team is AC Milan. I find joy in life's simple pleasures like hiking, watching the sunset, and appreciating the beauty of God’s creations. While I don't necessarily subscribe to the MBTI framework and wouldn't confine someone to just one type, I did once take the test and ended up with INFJ.

2.     Can you tell us the reason why you chose to study at Sogang GSIS?

Sogang was an ideal choice for me for several reasons. Firstly, the courses offered were fully in English, which was a decisive factor for me considering that my Korean skills were still a work in progress. I also liked the fact that Sogang GSIS has an internationally diverse environment, with students coming from different parts of the world, which adds to the learning experience. Most importantly, I would say, was the small class sizes, which meant more engaging discussions and a better learning environment, especially given my major in International Relations.

 3.     How do you usually spend your spare time in Korea?

There is always something to do in Korea, and the options are limitless. I enjoy hiking, and Korea has many great trails and mountains that you can explore. My favorite one is Hallasan (Korea’s highest mountain located in Jeju). Since I like traveling, I also visit new places, islands, and cities with my friends whenever we have time. Sometimes, I join the fun events organized by Sogang GSIS’s student council, like picnics along the Han River or movie nights at the university.

4.     Can you recommend your favorite place/spot in Seoul?

My favorite spot in Seoul is Seoul Forest, especially in spring during the cherry blossom season; it is absolutely breathtaking. Although it can get crowded sometimes, it is a lovely escape from the busy life of Seoul. I would recommend having a picnic with friends there when the weather is warm. For a serene escape from the bustling city, I also recommend taking a stroll along the picturesque Cheonggyecheon stream.Whether you're a history lover, a shopaholic, or simply seeking to soak in the vibrant atmosphere, Seoul has something special to offer for everyone.

5.     Any recommendations or know-how on life in Korea?

There's no definitive answer, but here's my take: it's crucial to stay grounded in who you are and where you come from, without feeling obligated to conform to the social norms of Korea. You don't have to make concessions on your values to find happiness here. I mention this because I've observed how easy it is to lose one's identity. I've seen numerous instances of foreign students feeling pressured to change their beliefs and behaviors just to "fit in." However, I firmly believe that you can stay true to yourself while still enjoying a fulfilling and memorable experience, and Sogang is a safe environment for that, providing a supportive space.

6.     Can you share your most memorable experience at Sogang GSIS with us?

One of my most memorable experiences at Sogang GSIS was during a war game in the American policy and foreign affairs class, which lasted the entire day. I was assigned the role of the president of the United States, and I had to make critical decisions throughout the simulation. It was both stressful and incredibly enjoyable. Stepping into the shoes of the president provided me with a unique perspective, and I found it fascinating to navigate such high-pressure situations. The experience not only challenged me intellectually but also allowed me to develop valuable skills in decision-making and diplomacy. It's moments like these that make studying at Sogang GSIS truly unforgettable.

7.     Do you have any advice for the prospective students at Sogang GSIS?

My advice is to make the most out of your time here. Test your ideas and opinions freely. Sogang GSIS provides a safe, judgment-free zone, so don't hold back or self-censor. Speak your mind and seize every opportunity to learn. Our professors are exceptional and have a wealth of knowledge to share, so make sure to take full advantage of that. Time flies by quickly; two years can feel like just two months. So, make the most of every moment and absorb as much as you can during your time at Sogang GSIS.
