Ducos, Lucero Medina - Dominican Republic / International Trade

1. Please introduce yourself (background, interests, your MBTI, and so on)

Hello everyone! My name is Lulu and I’m from the Dominican Republic. I’m currently in my last semester of International Trade at Sogang GSIS. My favorite hobby is getting to know new cultures and thanks to Sogang I have been able to make friends from all over the world. Before living in Korea, I had the opportunity to work in different government, judicial and diplomatic institutions in my country and in Spain. In case you were curious, my MBTI is ENFP-A, maybe for that reason I consider myself a very social and positive person. I really enjoy going out with my friends, visiting museums and trying food from all over the world. Seoul as the true capital of the world allows me to do all the things I enjoy at any time.

2. Can you tell us the reason why you chose to study at Sogang GSIS?

I decided to study at Sogang GSIS because it is one of the most distinguished and prestigious international studies schools in South Korea. However, Sogang has much more than that, all the professors are outstanding professionals in their areas and the academic curriculum is focused on creating professionals who can stand out in their different areas. I must also point out that the GSIS office is always available whenever I have questions or need any kind of assistance. The truth is that Sogang feels like a family and for this reason I chose to do my studies here.

3. How do you usually spend your spare time in Korea?

Seoul is a totally cosmopolitan capital and for this reason there is always something to do. I love discovering new cafes with my friends or visiting the latest art exhibition in one of the hundreds of museums in the city. Also, according to the season the activities change completely, for example in spring I love to see the cherry blossoms in the different parks. In summer it is a must to ride a bike around the Han River. In autumn go for a picnic and in winter walk around the city seeing the Christmas decorations.

4. Can you recommend your favorite place/spot in Seoul?

Among my favorite places in Seoul is Yeouido park to watch the sunsets in front of the Han River. I also love walking around Hannam to discover different art galleries and cafes. Finally, near the university is Hongdae where I usually go out with my friends to enjoy dinner.

5. Any recommendations or know-how on life in Korea?

Remember that initially being in Korea can be extremely overwhelming due to cultural differences and language, but I can assure you that life in Korea can be extremely practical when you don’t over stress yourself. So don't be afraid to make a mistake because Koreans will appreciate and understand the effort you are making and the respect you have for their culture.

6. Can you share your most memorable experience at Sogang GSIS with us?

One of the most memorable moments was when I went out with my classmates for the first time and I was able to appreciate all the different points of view they had since we were a group of people from all over the world. The anecdotes, experiences, ways of life among other things are totally different and that is why I feel that this experience is even more valuable and special.

7. Do you have any advice for the prospective students at Sogang GSIS?

I recommend new students to try to integrate as much as possible into the student body, either by being part of the student council or being a TA of your favorite teacher or registering for one of the clubs that the school has at that moment. This will be part of your experience so make the most out of every opportunity.

8. Do you have anything to say to Sogang GSIS?

These two years have flown by, but it's because I've enjoyed every second here. Thank you for all the challenges and opportunities you have given me. All the time I have felt totally supported by the school and the teachers, so I feel extremely grateful and happy to be part of this international family.
