Hernandez, Ruby - USA / International Relations

1. Please introduce yourself (background, interests, your MBTI, and so on)

Hey! My name's Ruby and I'm from New Jersey. I'm currently a third-semester student who's still figuring out how to get by. Before Sogang University, I was a business management major. The switch from business to relations? Interest. It doesn't take much to get me to do something, once I'm set on it I go for it. My MBTI is INTP, and although I'm listed as an introvert I am more of an ambivert. As long as I'm comfortable enough with the people I'm with I can be as outgoing as I can be but with others not so much. I love animation and you can definitely catch me talking about the latest animated film or show; my favorites would have to be from Disney and Dreamworks.

2. Can you tell us the reason why you chose to study at Sogang GSIS?

I was actually earning an MBA degree (taking on the 5-year program right from my undergrad) back home but found out really quickly that I wasn't happy. After looking into other programs I decided to take on International Relations. I was an exchange student at Sogang back in 2018 so when it came to applying to master programs I knew I had to apply to Sogang again! Best decision ever. Coming from the States, it was also very beneficial as the program costs at Sogang were more reasonable than in my old school.

3. How do you usually spend your spare time in Korea?

With my friends! As long as it's not raining I'm happy to go anywhere and everywhere. Otherwise, you'll catch me not doing any work and just diving into DisneyPlus.

4. Can you recommend your favorite place/spot in Seoul?

Literally any park/mountain/forest, they're all so beautiful! You'll have a great time with friends there whether it's just for a walk, a photoshoot, or a picnic! My favorite would have to be Seoul Forest but if I were you I would go early in the morning if you want to take as many photos as you can. In the afternoon you'd be dealing with a sea full of people.

5. Any recommendations or know-how on life in Korea?

Besides learning Korean, the most important thing would have to be really observing the culture. You may be culture-shocked, best be prepared for it. Then there's the food, the delicious food. Try everything you can, it's all worth it.

6. Can you share your most memorable experience at Sogang GSIS with us?

Never be afraid to ask! Whether it's the office, your teacher, or a fellow classmate, everyone's here to help! You'll also end up making lifelong friends so don't forget to enjoy every moment together. In terms of everyday living, if you feel like there's something you won't be able to find here in Korea from your own country, make sure to bring it. You'll be here for a while so whether it be your favorite snack or medicine, bring it.

7. Do you have any advice for the prospective students at Sogang GSIS?

Everybody here is awesome so be prepared to make a lot of new friends. Our Student Council (SC) also holds many events so be ready for that. On the other hand, Sogang really does focus on the academic aspect so please don’t forget to prepare for classes. It’s better to revise what you’ve learned and read class materials in advance so you can join class discussions and leave a good impression on your professors. Another note is that the classroom in K-building is big and cold so don’t forget to bring an extra “blanket” to keep yourself warm in winter or early spring!!

8. Do you have anything to say to Sogang GSIS?

I was interested in the National Intelligence and Security track after I enrolled here but was sad to see only two courses were offered. In the future, I hope the track expands further to engage more students in national intelligence and security.
