1. Please
introduce yourself (background, interests, your MBTI, and so on)
Hello, I am Daianna from Laos. I am
honored to be a recipient of Global Korea Scholarship (GKS), which has given me
the opportunity to pursue my graduate studies in South Korea. Currently, I am studying at Sogang University’s
Graduate school of International Studies (GSIS), majoring in International
Relations. This is my 4th semester and my last semester here in Sogang.
Coming and staying to study in Korea, It opened
up my new door. I never lived far away from my family. It meant I have to start
my new journey alone without my family and friends. I never did anything by
myself specially cooking. I have to start to learn everything by myself, lucky
for me that I had MR. Google and MS. Youtube that helped me to improve my
cooking skill. Lucky for me that I always meet good people that help me to
survive when I am facing the struggle. No words can explained how grateful I
am. 1000 times of saying thank you it is still not enough for them. Thank you
Friends!!
As an INFJ, I value meaning connections,
deep refection and purpose-driven goals. Mostly, people always think that I am extrovert
and like to talk a lot. No, I am not. In contrast, I will not talk just because,
I will talk if I have something to say ^^
I enjoy immersing myself in music, as it
helps me relax and recharge. I also love hiking and engaging in adventure
sports, which allows me to explore nature and challenge myself physically and
mentally. These interests reflect my inner balance between introspection and
action always seeking new experiences that enrich my life and understanding of
the world.
2. Can
you tell us the reason why you chose to study at Sogang GSIS?
During the time that I was applying for
the scholarship, the sponsor allowed me to choose the university that I wanted
to study. So, I chose Sogang and Sogang
GSIS is my first choice. Sogang GSIS stood out to me because it is teaching in
English 100 percent. It is really hard for foreigner like me to study in Korean
in academically terms especially in my major. Sogang GSIS has a strong emphasis
on critical thinking, academic rigor, and interdisciplinary learning. I was
drawn to its reputation for fostering global leaders and professionals who are
not only academically excellent but also socially responsible. As someone who
is passionate about development, diplomacy and international cooperation, I
found curriculum to be highly relevant to my goals.
Moreover, the vibrant
and supportive community at Sogang GSIS appealed to me. The smaller class sizes
allow for more engaging discussions and deeper connections with professors and
peers. In Sogang GSIS also have the student council, TAs and lovely officer
staffs that always help when student face some difficulties. During my semesters, I got a chance to be a
member of Students Council. And now I am a President of SC in Spring semester,
I would say that our GSIS is the perfect environment to grow intellectually and
personally. It is a place where I could build both knowledge and
character.
3. How
do you usually spend your spare time in Korea?
In my spare time, I love to work out and
chill in my house. Hang out with my friends sometimes. On the weekends, I
mostly spend time in my house. I am that person who does not like crowded
places. So, I always avoid traveling on the weekends. On holidays, I often go
exploring different neighborhoods, visiting art museums and joining festival. I
really want to do hiking in Korea but most of my friend they are not into it
(they are old they said lol). I will try to do it someday (very soon). Occasionally,
I challenge myself with adventure sports like Ice skating or Skiing, which
gives me an adrenaline rush and makes my life in Korea even more thrilling.
4. Can
you recommend your favorite place/spot in Seoul?
My favorites place
in Seoul is Sillim Stream. It is the long stream near my house where I can do
exercises like jogging, biking. Whether I need a quiet place to think, read a
book m or take a relaxing walk, Sillim Stream never disappoints. The changing
scenery with each season makes it magical spot all year.
5. Any
recommendations or know-how on life in Korea?
One piece of advice I would give to anyone
new to Korea is: Be open-minded, ( not in that way I know what you think lol).
What I am trying to say is that be open to new experiences, but also take time
to understand and respect the culture.
Also, try everything from food and
festivals to public transportation. Korea is full of surprises and hidden gems.
Budgeting and managing time well are also important, especially for
international students. Lastly, don’t hesitate to ask for help people are
kinder than you think.
6. Can
you share your most memorable experiences at Sogang GSIS with us?
One of my most memorable experiences at Sogang GSIS was the end year party. It was full of foods, drinks and fun. It was the event that I can enjoy after the academic stress during semester. This event gave me an opportunity to spend time not just with my friends, but also the other students from different majors. It was the great time for building a sense of global friendship and solidarity. It also reminded me why I chose to study at GSIS to grow, to connect, and to contribute.
7. Do
you have any advice for the prospective students at Sogang GSIS?
To all future students of Sogang GSIS:
come with an open heart and a curious mind. This program is more than just
studying. It is a journey to growth, discovery and building your future. Engage
actively in class, join school events, and make friends from all over the
world. Be kind to people that you meet, understanding the uncertain things, not
for anyone but for yourself. Important thing, try not to compare yourself with
other people. It only gives to unhappiness.
Compare you on yesterday and you on today. Just take your time and trust
the process. As I mentioned, you will not alone. You will have Professors,
Student Council, TAs and officer staffs, they are always willing to help and
support you.
