Self introduction
Hiii <3 I’m Ana Cruz, a Spanish majoring in Korea and East Asia at Sogang GSIS. I graduated from Universidad Loyola Andalucía with a degree in International Relations and a major in Security and Foreign Policy. I am an ENTJ and a Libra so you’ll be able to find me in the club as well as in the library (we are all about a well-balanced life hihihi). I practice sports, I am quite creative but above all: I love food!
Can you tell us the reason why you
chose to study at Sogang GSIS?
Back in 2021 when I was
about to graduate from college I was professionally and personally very
interested in South Korea and the East Asian region. Professionally, I am
deeply in love with the International Relations discipline so it only made
sense for me to specialize in East Asian Studies for my master’s degree. And
personally, I love Korean culture, that is why I eventually decided to apply
for the GKS scholarship. I did not get it at first but I decided to persevere
and tried again in 2022!
Both times I chose
Sogang University as my main option since it has the perfect program taught in
English that allows students to further their knowledge about foreign policy,
politics, economy, society and culture of the East Asian region. I also
considered that Sogang University is a reputed school with renowned and
respected professors that would be able to guide me in my future professional
career. Furthermore, the Sogang campus is very well located in Mapo-gu so apart
from studying in the very heart of Seoul, I would be able to discover the city
and have wonderful experiences.
Thankfully, I became a GKS scholar in 2022 and got to start my master’s degree at Sogang in autumn 2023. Now I can gladly say it exceeded my expectations and that I am living the wonderful experiences I dreamt about for so long.
How do you usually spend your spare
time in Korea?
Firstly, the best thing
about being a foreigner in Korea is being able to explore and enjoy it every
single day. So not only discovering neighborhoods in Seoul but also going to
other cities is my favorite thing to do here!
I also play volleyball
and go to the gym but my favorite sport since I came here is hiking for sure.
Mountains in Korea are everywhere and super accessible so wherever you are, I
am sure there is one within 30 minutes by public transport. Exploring South
Korea’s nature is a beautiful way of getting to know the country, relieving
stress and exercising. As I said earlier, I also love dancing and having fun
with my friends and for that, Hongdae is my go-to! But when it comes to food
it's impossible to choose. Definitely Seoul has great food from all over the
world so there is always something new to try.
Can you recommend your favorite
place/spot in Seoul?
It is definitely impossible to choose, there are so
many amazing and lovely places. I recently went to Achasan and even though it
is not a very high mountain, it has stunning views of the city. If you like
exhibitions, there are numerous museums around the city but Pace Gallery holds
beautiful expositions. Regarding food (it's always food for me), you must try
Burgerry (or 버거리 “bogori”
which sounds way better), the best smash burger I my opinion! Finally, I always
recommend treating yourself, especially when there’s lots to study. For that, I
love studying at “EP.” while enjoying a piece of cake and a good coffee.
Any recommendations or know-how on
life in Korea?
It sounds basic but do
as much research as possible before coming! While it's fun to be surprised by
cultural shocks, some people can be overwhelmed when they move to a country so
different and far from home. To avoid having a hard time in Korea, learn first
how you can adapt your personal and cultural needs when living here. Korea is
beautiful, fun and convenient but I highly encourage everyone to learn Korean
beforehand. I would say Level 3 is ideal to live comfortably and make friends
but if that is too much, at least learn how to read fluently and formulate
simple sentences. It will definitely take your experience in Korea to a whole
different level!
Can you share your most memorable experience at Sogang GSIS with us?
Despite me being an “E” (extrovert) according to my MBTI, I find it hard to approach people first and make friends. That is why my favorite days have to be either the GSIS picnic at the beginning of the semester and the GSIS party held at the very end. It is a great time to get to know everyone and have a fun time while enjoying food and drinks (hihihi). Last semester, during the winter party we had lots of food and drinks so we ended up dancing all night long! Also, the major dinner it’s a wonderful time to personally meet the professors, a great opportunity to extend your network and voice your concerns. All in all, the GSIS makes sure that no one feels lonely or lost, we always have eachothers backs!
Do you have any advice for the prospective students at Sogang GSIS?
I
would say, prepare yourself to work hard and give your 100%. This might sound
too intense but in our GSIS everyone is passionate and enthusiastic about their
studies so it always encourages you to work harder and better. Professors are
very supportive but also have high expectations and standards so they will make
sure students pursue excellence. All in all I would say that studying at Sogang
GSIS is the perfect balance between having fun and working hard for our future
aspirations.
Do you have anything to say to Sogang GSIS?
I
would like to say thank you to everyone for being so welcoming and kind to
everyone. Sogang GSIS is a small but diverse faculty, where people from all
over the world meet, freely exchange their views and help each other. I found
amazing friends and professors that I look up to so I am very thankful for this
wonderful experience!! <3
