Devaux-Yanganda, Clémence - France / International Trade

1. Please introduce yourself (background, interests, your MBTI, and so on)

Hi, I’m Clémence also called Clemy in Korea and I’m currently in my second semester at Sogang GSIS. My story with Korea began when I was just a child with a strong interest for Asian countries that led me to come for the first time to Asia at 18 in 2018. After a one-month solo travel in Taiwan and South Korea, I decided to study International Business along with English and Korean to be able to come back for a longer time in Korea. During my bachelor’s degree, I came back in Korea every year on vacation and on a 6-month exchange in KyungHee University.

2. Can you tell us the reason why you chose to study at Sogang GSIS?

After my bachelor’s degree in France, I had two options pursuing my studies abroad to apply for a better university and be able to fulfill my dream to live overseas or continue to study in France and probably face a tough competition. I chose to try my luck in Korea and Sogang was one of my first choice. My former university had an exchange program with the university, and I had heard good reviews about the Sogang GSIS online.

3. How do you usually spend your spare time in Korea?

There is so many things to do here! I usually love to visit cafe, sing at the karaoke, play video games late at night in 24/7 computer room and visit museum or exhibitions. I also enjoy the Korean night life with my friends as it’s probably my last years as a student and I particularly enjoy long night walks along the Han River.

Occasionally, I take some time off with my boyfriend to visit Korea and other Asian countries.

4. Can you recommend your favorite place/spot in Seoul?

I have so many favorite places in Seoul, but I will recommend the only place I go every week (except for computer room): the Han River. It might sound surprising but the Han River cross Seoul in the middle from one end to the other. You can enjoy walking or biking along the water, having picnics at Yeouido and enjoy the street food, water fountain and firework festival at Banpo. There are also two islands in the middle of the river that offer incredible views and botanical gardens. However, living in a big and crowded city, the river feels really vast and open; it is the best place to take a break and breath.

5. Any recommendations or know-how on life in Korea?

I think Korea is very practical and easy to live in as a young adult. My only recommendation is to learn basic Korean because it makes everything easier. Be open to learn South Korea’s culture and customs and deal with your residential card, phone number and bank account as soon as you can because some things require to check your ID.

6. Can you share your most memorable experience at Sogang GSIS with us?

My most memorable experience at Sogang GSIS must be the Sogang-Yonsei-Ehwa GSIS party. It was a party organized by the student council to bring together the GSIS student around Sinchon. Everyone was so nice, and we had colored bracelet to identify each university. I’ve never been prouder to study in Sogang and our team won the beer pong contest!

7. Do you have any advice for the prospective students at Sogang GSIS?

Coming to Korea might be a dream for a lot of you and you will have a lot of fun living here and it’s probably going to be a life changing experience but, be ready to study. Sogang GSIS professors are very good and create close relationship with each student. However, this is a master’s degree. So you will have to put effort and work into your academic life. Just be aware of it.

8. Do you have anything to say to Sogang GSIS?

The professors, teaching assistants and Student Council are here for you so don’t skip on it. Join events, ask questions, and enjoy special lectures, alumni night and internship opportunities!
